What did Christ Command of us Disciples?

Today our culture has taken the Gospel of Christ, and it has become watered down to become almost palatable to anyone. This can be very toxic and very dangerous to those who have misconceptions about true Christianity. We as Christians must make a point to tell those we are teaching that when we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, our life is now His life. What are we agreeing to when we accept this invitation to follow him?

We all need Christ in our lives, for without Christ our sins are not forgiven. When we become disciples, what does Christ himself command of us? Let us examine the commandments of Christ.

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:36-40 ESV)

The first commandment is quite simple, and that is to love the Lord with everything that we are, our heart, soul, and mind. This is the very first thing that is expected or commanded of us as believers. The second commandment is just like the first, we are to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Neighbor in this context simply doesn't mean the family in the house beside yours, it means all of those that Christ died for on the cross at Calvary and that is mankind. We are to love every single person on this earth as we love ourselves. This is hard, yet we must try our hardest to love everyone, even those that are our enemies because Christ died for them too.

Christ not only commanded us of these things above, but he also commissioned us to continue the ministry that he would not be there to continue.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20 ESV)

The last thing that we are supposed to do as disciples of Christ is to make more disciples, spreading the Good News of Christ and teach them to obey the very two commandments that Christ himself taught those first eleven to do. Continuing the work of Christ until the day that he returns.
